Eligibility

To be eligible for the role you must fulfil the following criteria.

Be eligible to work in the UK. This is a non-reserved post and is open.

Be able to provide ALL of the documents we need to complete your pre-employment screening and security clearance.

Candidates will be subject to UK immigration requirements as well as Civil Service nationality rules. Please be aware that foreign or dual nationality is not an automatic bar. However certain posts may have restrictions which could affect those who do not have sole British nationality or who have personal connections with certain countries outside the UK. For more information on job nationality requirements and the right to work in the UK, see Nationality Rules and Right to Work in the UK to check if you are eligible to apply.

Security

To apply for roles in DWP you will need to confirm your employment history for at least 3 years prior to the date of application so that pre-employment checks (BPSS) can be undertaken. If you have spent significant time abroad (a total of 6 months in the past 3 years) you would be required to give a reasonable account of the reasons why. People working with government assets must complete basic personnel security standard checks.

For roles in Counter Fraud Compliance and Debt (CFCD) there may be additional checks as you may require enhanced security clearance.

Internal and Cross Government roles

If you are applying for an internal or cross-government role, there are additional eligibility criteria you will need to meet. These are:

  1. Be a current civil servant, or employed by a Civil Service Commission accredited public body

Please note: Not all staff working in a government department or accredited non-departmental public body are considered to be civil servants. If any of the following apply to your circumstances, then you are not eligible.

    • You are a member of an agency working in a government department
    • You are employed by an external organisation contracted into government roles
    • You are a self-employed contractor working in a government department
  2. Be employed on a Fair and Open contract
  3. Successfully passed probation
  4. Not be in a review period following a warning for poor performance
  5. Not be in the improvement period following a warning for unsatisfactory attendance
  6. Not have a live disciplinary warning for misconduct with restriction of duties, including a ban on promotion

If you are unsure whether a warning is still live you should check your warning letter. This will tell you how long your warning will remain in place and gives the dates that your warning is live from and to.

It is important you respond to the eligibility questions accurately. At any point in the process, including once in the role, incorrect information provided regarding eligibility could result in disciplinary action, including dismissal.
